Who I Am

I am a civil litigator and mediator. I have devoted the overwhelming majority of my time to family law and also to cases involving serious sexual harassment. I believe I am widely respected by fellow lawyers for the depth of my experience and have achieved the highest rating (AV) under Martindale Hubbell’s Peer Review Rating™ process*. Above all, I am a pragmatist who uses his negotiating skills to grasp the key issues and expedite solutions in even difficult cases.

What Experience has Taught Me

I firmly believe in making every possible effort to resolve family disputes by mediation and settlement. Thirty years of experience has taught me that the alternative, litigation, is an absolute last resort when all else fails. Litigation, more often than not, leads to increased hostility, estrangement of children, and financial ruin for everyone except the lawyers. The stress of divorce litigation has, with good reason, been equated with the death of a close family member.

Consequently, I will not humor clients who wish to use the legal process for any reason other than dispute resolution. If you want to vent, I am willing to find you a psychologist or a counselor. In fact, getting counseling during a divorce can be a great help. If you leave your emotions at the door, you make better decisions. Also, if you want to use custody as leverage and your children as pawns, I will not help you. Divorce, even an uncontested divorce, takes a toll on children, even in the least confrontational cases. I will not help you make the process worse for them.
